Warren End, London

The clients, whose existing house is luxurious but unexciting, wanted a new living space that would be suitable for entertaining. The new building contains a party space on the first floor and a large bedroom with en-suite for our client’s teenage son on the ground floor, as well as a utility room and garage. The lofty and characterful party space has a bar and a cloakroom with a mezzanine above it at one end. Access to the mezzanine, imagined as a space for guests to sleep, involves stepping on the timber shelving unit and going through a trap door in the floor.

Elegantly curved timber portal frames have been used for the roof and the internal wall/roof surfaces are clad in two types of timber. Structural glazing at the apex of the roof gives wonderful views of the night sky and a feeling if lightness and spaciousness to the room. Externally the building has been related to the existing house through a use of white render and copper on both.
