Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Unit, Princess Marina Hospital, Northampton

Providing one of the first bespoke new-build CAMHS units in the country, this £2.5m scheme comprises a 10-bed unit with en-suite bedroom accommodation arranged around a landscaped internal courtyard on an existing hospital site.

As is typical with our projects, the design has been developed in close consultation with service users and staff. The building is generally domestic in scale but features a glazed entrance tower and a generous rooflight at the heart of the social accommodation. Staff accommodation is provided in a separate wing in order to provide them with dedicated and adequate relaxation space.

The interior design proposals respond to cues provided by service users and have been very well received by the Client. These include bold colours that provide identity to each bedroom and which are also carried through to adjacent corridors to further express individuality.

Solar hot water panels are provided on the south facing roof that help to minimise energy consumption and reduce potential CO2 emissions.

The project was completed within a very tight programme and budget and we worked very closely with the client and contractor, Medicinq Simons, to ensure its successful delivery.
