Forest Primary Care Centre, Enfield, London

This project was a shortlisted finalist for the Building Better Healthcare award for Best Primary Care in 2006 and images of it were used to illustrate good practice in CABE’s 2009 LIFT report. This was one of the first of the new breed of Primary Care Centres to be completed with a view to providing integrated health facilities for local residents. The service means that local residents can now receive diagnostic tests and treatments previously only available at the local hospital.

The 3,800m2 building includes 4 GP surgeries, minor surgery suite, dentist, nurses, pharmacy, phlebotomy, baby clinics, family planning, leg ulcer clinic, speech and language therapy, drug and alcohol services, health visitors’ offices and a café, as well as facilities available for the local community groups.

The completion of this scheme marked the successful completion of the first phase of our masterplan for the regeneration of this part of Enfield. Further schemes included by that also included an extra care housing scheme and a housing scheme.

The two parallel wings of accommodation are arranged on either side of an attractive top-lit reception area. The waiting area looks out onto a landscaped courtyard. The building is large but maximises opportunities for natural light and ventilation. An attractive colour scheme is used to further assist in guiding visitors around the building.
