Artesian Health Centre, Southwark, London

This project was shortlisted for innovation in the 2006 Building Better Healthcare Awards, and highly commended for sustainability in the 2007 Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The accommodation is organised on the ground floor of a mixed-use, award-winning building. Facilities include GPs, sexual-health clinic, treatment rooms, dentist, chemists, chronic disease management and primary care services. A podiatry clinic is independently run and has a separate entrance, reception and waiting area that leads to the purpose-designed diagnostic and treatment facilities. It also serves as the locality base for the podiatry outreach service. The Primary Care and other facilities are adaptable and flexible.

The light, airy reception leads through to a delightful private courtyard and a top-lit, curving corridor that, in turn, leads onto a variety of consulting/ treatment rooms and terminates in a small sub-wait which overlooks the park. The developer contributed towards the formation of a running track and children’s play facilities to the nearby park as part of the Healthy Living Strategy for the project.

The complete building includes central heat and power (CHP), a car club, a green roof over the health centre and achieves an EcoHomes excellent rating.
