Bear Gardens, Southwark, London

Two crumbling warehouses close to the river at Bankside were made available by Southwark Council for the Globe Theatre to redevelop as rehearsal spaces. There also needed to be a commercial development so that the scheme would pay for itself. Our initial involvement was to write the brief for an invited-entry design competition, which entailed understanding the Globe’s requirements and the planning constraints on the site. Our entry included an elegant residential tower, with publicly accessible viewing platform at the top, and rehearsal facilities in the refurbished warehouses.
